This past Friday our Bearcat volleyball team beat Truman in an exciting five set match. Our team deserved this win. The players have been battling in practice every day and have lost several very close matches in the past few weeks. Last Tuesday, we lost a close five set match to the Missouri Western Griffons. It was really tough to be edged out at the last second and the girls proved that they were hungry for the win on Friday. Our team is starting to find our identity and proving that we are a team that will fight until the final point. We have about a month left for the volleyball season, and we still have so much to prove.
This Wednesday marks our annual “Pink Out” game against Central Missouri, who is nationally ranked. This exact match last year ended in a thrilling five set win over Washburn, who was ranked number 2 in the nation at the time. Bearcat Arena was packed with fans in pink that were there to support the athletes as well as those who have battled breast cancer. We hope to have a similar outcome at the match this year. Our fans have truly been amazing this season and have supported this team through everything. We hope that we continue to receive the support and watch this team reach their potential. So everyone, please come to Bearcat Arena this Wednesday at 7 p.m. and wear pink!

As we head into our last week of the season, I ask myself, “Where did the season go?”
It seems like just yesterday that I was in Jess’s office this summer talking to her about how excited I was for everyone to arrive on campus and to see them all play together. Now, we only have three matches left. This season hasn’t exactly gone the way we expected, but we stayed together as a unit through it all. We have had incredible team chemistry this year. It has been amazing to see the girls stick together through the incredible wins and the difficult losses.
In this last week, I believe that our team will finish the season on a high note. They will fight for every point and show their passion for the game. Tuesday night is Senior Night at 7 pm against Pitt State at Bearcat Arena. It is our last home game of the season and the team will battle to defend our home court for the last time this year. Please come out and support our team, especially our seniors, Alex Hanna and Laira Akin. It is a game that you don’t want to miss!
We will finish the season this weekend away at Southwest Baptist on Friday and Missouri Southern on Saturday.
Help cheer on the team to finish the season with a 3-0 record this week!
Wednesday marks the first MIAA Conference game for the Bearcat Volleyball team. We play at Emporia State University on September 14 at 7 pm, and we are definitely ready to show the Hornets that we are not a team to be taken lightly.
We have displayed some promising talent through our preseason tournaments at University of Nebraska Omaha and Southwest Baptist University. Our record is currently 3-5, but I do not believe that is a true representation of how well we have played. Yes, some matches were better than others, but that just means that we have room for improvement. We have lost some close matches to some talented teams, but we have grown and learned from each of those losses. Currently, we are trying to find our team identity and really discover what our team is capable of this season.
This Friday we are having a Green and White Scrimmage at Bearcat Arena at 7 pm that you won’t want to miss! Fans will have a chance to see the girls in an intense scrimmage, meet the players, learn the rules of the game, and participate in some fun activities as well.
Our home opener is against No. 4 Washburn on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 pm. Last year’s match-up with Washburn (ranked No. 2 at the time) resulted in an exciting 5 game win. We hope to see a big crowd and defend our home court!
The first day of school is here, which means that preseason practices are officially over. Goodbye two-a-days, ice baths, lunches in the union, and spending every minute together. Well, those last three will continue throughout the season, but our players are excited that they will not have to face two-a-days again until next year.
Our two seniors, Alex Hanna and Laira Akin, shared a moment after their last preseason practice to celebrate that they survived the two-a-days together for the last time. Our seven freshmen came in on August 13 with fresh attitudes and great work ethic on the volleyball court. It has been great to see the entire team develop into a new unit.
Our motto for this season is, “Transforming Bearcat Volleyball.” Last year marked the first time that a Bearcat Volleyball team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament and we expect to continue to Transform our program into one that is always at the top of the conference.
We finished 2-1 at our scrimmage tournament in Columbia this past Saturday. As the day went on, we got better and better. I can’t wait for our season to officially begin and see what our girls can achieve. We look forward to having loud fans in the stands and continuing our reputation as having the hardest gym to play in the MIAA.
