During the fall trimester, the Learning & Teaching Center staff and two faculty committees have been studying various learning management systems (LMS). (An LMS is the software that runs Northwest Online which is currently powered by Pearson Learning Studio or eCollege.) The two faculty committees participating in the study are the Educational Technology Committee and the Learning & Teaching Center committee.
Northwest Online has been supported by Pearson Learning Studio or eCollege since 1999. Several faculty have expressed an interest in studying LMS providers to determine if there are dealmakers that could promote changing systems.
The Learning & Teaching Center staff have developed a process for the LMS study. Staff have researched a list of LMS providers, created an administrator matrix and faculty matrix to narrow down the list. Several web demonstrations were scheduled and viewed. Sandbox c course sites were requested to try out features and functionalities. Currently, three LMS have been presented to faculty via a web demo. Two have been scheduled for on-site visits during the spring 2016 trimester for a larger faculty audience.
The two LMS scheduled for on-site visits are Canvas and Brightspace (Desire 2 Learn). Canvas will visit campus to demo to all Northwest faculty on January 14 from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm in the Union Board Room. All Northwest faculty are invited to attend and provide feedback on Canvas. Brightspace will visit campus on January 28 from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm in the Union Board Room. All Northwest faculty are invited to attend and provide feedback on Brightspace. There may be some other LMS slated to be demonstrated during the January or February time-frame. These will be communicated via e-mail to all faculty as they are determined.
