Get Smart! Understanding What Makes a Smart TV Special

There has been a lot of hype lately concerning a relatively new technology in the television industry called a smart TV. However, there are still a lot of people out there who don’t quite understand what a smart TV is, or what it can do. The answer to the first question is pretty easy. A smart TV is simply a TV that has access to the Internet. The things that a smart TV can accomplish are also pretty amazing. Most smart TVs come with video viewing apps such as Netflix, Hulu and Youtube. They also have application access to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. But for those of you who enjoy simply surfing the web, some smart TVs can also run a web browser. You can interact with these systems many different ways, but the most common way is to wirelessly hook up your phone or tablet to the TV via WiFi.

There are multiple ways to turn your “dumb TV” into a smart one, but the most common methods are to either buy a new TV that has wireless capability, or to purchase a special box that allows your television to access the Internet. One of the newest and most affordable options is made by Google and is called the Chromecast. A Chromecast is an HDMI dongle about the size of a flash drive that plugs into your TV and allows you to stream your devices (e.g. laptop, smartphone, tablet) directly to the big screen. Currently, Chromecast costs $35 and is only available in the US. Chromecast also doesn’t (yet) have full access to all of the content of a typical smart TV that you would buy in the store, but instead, it simply puts your device’s screen onto your TV.

All in all, there are many ways to turn your dumb TV into a smart TV, some ways more expensive than others. The most important thing to do if your are considering buying a Smart TV product though is to make sure you do your research to find out what is available and what exactly what you want to get out of your TV. If you simply want a larger screen to work with, Chromecast would be perfect for you. If you do not already have another device to surf with, a new smart TV might be the right choice. In the end, the decision is up to you, just make sure you make the smart one!
