How to Find an Internship

What is an internship? An internship gives students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience in a career-specific field. Internships can also be used as supplements to earn college credit. An internship is a great way for students to get real life experience and to help them figure out if that career field is what they really want as their career. Historically, internships are for juniors and seniors at the college undergraduate level. According to Lauren Berger in a Forbes article, there are a number of things you can do to help get internships regardless of how many credit hours you have earned.

Cold calling

Call up potential companies and ask to speak with an internship coordinator. You may get lucky and be asked to send them your resume and cover letter. Take immediate action when you get a lead The saying is true, “the early bird gets the worm”. Always follow-up with companies you want to intern with. They will appreciate you contacting them and your professionalism.

Prepare for interviews

Before you go on any interview whether it is for a job or internship, you should always research the company. They may ask you questions regarding the company, and it is in good faith that you be prepared to answer those questions.

Ask what the internship would entail

Be very inquisitive about the internship you are applying for. It is not only for your own good but the good of the company, showing them your interest in the company and position in question. There is no need to waste anyone’s time or energy.

Say you are ready to start immediately

Persistence and eagerness are always good traits to portray when you are in an interview.

Volunteer to be the first intern

If a company does not have an intern program, ask to be the first; it could not only be beneficial for you but also for the company. It never hurts to just ask.

Make a list of companies you want to work for

It may be helpful to make a list of dream companies to start your internship search. Completing an internship with a company you want to work for could help you get a job there once you graduate.

Follow-up

Check back with the company two weeks after you send it.

Ask for letters of recommendation

Ask for letters of recommendation two weeks before the end of your internship. Berger suggests you have at least one letter of recommendation, which can help you land your next internship or a job.

Work hard and send handwritten thank-you notes after your internship

Persistence and diligence can get you a long way. Throughout Berger’s college career, she had a total of 15 internships. Through her many connections she made, Berger started her own company Internqueen that helps students find internships.
